De-Aging Your BFF

How do we help our dogs live longer?

Itā€™s one of the most important questions in the dog science community. And luckily thereā€™s a lot of attention being paid to solving the age-old aging problem. Here we break down some of the top players who are currently working on the aging problem, and what this could mean for the future.

Top Players

The worldā€™s most influential synthetic biologist, George Church of Harvard Medical School, is behind a new company that plans to rejuvenate dogs using gene therapy. The stealth startup Rejuvenate Bio, thinks dogs arenā€™t just manā€™s best friend but also the best way to bring age-defeating treatments to market.

So Far: Rejuvenate recently published a landmark paper claiming that mice live longer after genetic reprogramming, a landmark for rejuvenation technology (via MIT Technology Review)

Rejuvenate is currently working on gene-therapy drugs for dogs and humans, including one specifically designed to treat heart failure.

Loyal is one of the startups investing heavily in solving this problem. According to their website, this San Francisco-based startup is a part of ā€œCellular Longevity, a San Francisco-based biotech firm leading pioneering research into the science of longevity.

In 2021, TechCrunch reported Loyal raising $27m in a Series A, committed to ā€œbuilding an animal pharmaceutical company that is developing therapeutics aimed at extending both lifespan and healthspan for dogs, utilizing companion dog citizen science studies of over 500 dogs to better understand dog aging and eventually parlay that R&D into products intended for humans.ā€

Loyal hopes to bring LOY-003 to market as soon as 2026, and expects the first dog to receive it as part of a clinical trial as early as this year.

So far: According to an interview in Wired, founder and CEO Celine Halioua talked about the progress, and while they havenā€™t found the fountain of youth yet, ā€œWe've improved markers of pathological aging that are tied to a reduction in quality of life. Assuming everything goes correctly and it's all FDA regulated, having a product that pet parents can buy in 2025.ā€

The Dog Aging Project is funded by the National Institutes of Health. According to their website, ā€œHealthy aging means being able to stay active and free from major disease for the duration of life. But too often, getting older is characterized by debilitating decline. What if we could better understand the biological and environmental factors that influence aging? Studies like the Dog Aging Project will inform the next generation of medicine, keeping us healthier, longer.ā€

Similar to Loyal, The Dog Aging Project is also working on anti-aging drugs for dogs, specifically exploring the potential of the drug rapamycin to improve health span.

So far: A clinical trial is researching the potential of rapamycin, a drug used for preventing organ transplant rejection and treating certain cancers, in patients with cardiac stents. A preliminary trial involving 24 dogs has shown promising results in terms of safety and effectiveness. Dogs taking a non-immunosuppressive dose experienced no side effects. Those treated with rapamycin for 10 weeks showed improved heart function compared to the placebo group, as measured by echocardiography.

A variety of research projects have already been conducted evaluating aspects of aging and age-related diseases in dogs, and the Dog Aging Project is expected to continue collecting data for at least 10 years.

If youā€™d like to learn more about the Dog Aging Project check out their website, and you can even nominate your dog to be a candidate to participate in their study!

THIS is why BARK is our favorite box of toysā€¦

So hereā€™s the deal: This is Dog Juiceā€™s first official partnership and we actually reached out to BARK to see if they would want to sponsor an edition. The reason we did that is because, in all honesty, weā€™ve gotten their monthly BarkBox and Super Chewer boxes for years and absolutely love them. And hereā€™s why we think youā€™ll love it too:

This monthly subscription box is the only box of unique, thoughtfully-designed toys that keeps Maxine happy and engaged on a consistent basis ā€” and they have two options based on your dog's play style. BarkBox toys are packed with fluff, squeakers, and push for dogs that love to play. Super Chewer is extra durable, tough toys for dogs that love to play harder. Nearly indestructible toys for heavy chewers. Both BarkBox and Super Chewer boxes include unique, thoughtfully designed toys, with the Super Chewer box geared towards heavy chewers with toys that are extra-durable and nearly indestructible. Every month, we get a box that contains:

  • Two original toys, two full bags of treats

  • The toys are designed and created in-house by the folks at Bark, and are totally customizable to your dogā€™s unique needs and personality

  • Each box of toys is inspired by a different theme every month (This month is The Simpsons!)

    • Previous themes include: Dunkin Donuts, Summer Pool Party, Jurassic Park, Marvel, Halloween ā€” and ALL the toys are newly designed creations cooked up in Barkā€™s lab of genius toy designers.

The names of the toys in the Simpsons Box had us cracking up: Throwmer Simpson, Over Retriever Lisa, Treats My Shorts šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

AND GUESS WHAT? The folks at BARK let us DOUBLE THE TOYS youā€™re gonna get with an EXCLUSIVE OFFER!! Click below to get four toys with your Simpsons box!!

Sign up today & you'll DOUBLE your first box of toys and score the special edition Simpsons collection (only valid on multi-month plans)

We HIGHLY recommend this box of toys. If youā€™re like me and love getting mail, opening a new box of awesome dog toys every month is probably as good as it gets.

Maui Needs Our Help!

The wildfires in Maui have been ravaging Lahaina, and there are a lot of incredible people on the ground doing amazing work to help humans and pets alike. As shelters become overcrowded, more support is needed to help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome the hundreds of dogs that people are risking their lives to save.

Please donate to The Maui Humane Society if you can:
