šŸ“¬ The USPS released their annual dog bite rankings!

Their annual dog incident list was just released, but who was #1?

The United States Postal Service just released their recent ā€œDog Biteā€ state rankings.

Every day, hundreds of thousands of dedicated U.S. Postal Service carriers lace up their boots, shoulder their satchels, and head out to do one of America’s most essential—and often underappreciated—jobs.

But along their routes, too many are facing a danger that shouldn’t be part of the job: dog attacks.

The USPS has just released its annual dog bite rankings, and the numbers are eye-opening. In 2023, more than 5,800 postal employees were attacked by dogs while simply doing their jobs. That’s 5,800 too many.

Houston topped last year’s list, with Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cleveland, and San Diego not far behind. These are not just numbers. They represent real injuries, trauma, and in some cases, long-term consequences for workers who were just delivering our letters, birthday cards, and online orders.

As part of USPS’s National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign—this year’s theme being "Don’t let your dog bite the hand that serves you"—the message is clear: dog owners must take greater responsibility.

Let’s be real. No dog owner wants to believe their beloved pet could hurt someone. But it only takes a split second for a friendly pup to turn territorial or startled. Postal carriers are trained to be vigilant and cautious, but it’s ultimately on pet owners to keep their dogs secured and under control.

Here’s what we can all do:

  • Keep dogs inside the house or behind a fence during mail delivery hours.

  • Don’t let children answer the door when a carrier is delivering mail, especially with a dog nearby.

  • Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery so you know when mail is coming—and can prepare accordingly.

This isn’t just about avoiding injuries. It’s about respect—respect for the people who show up no matter the weather, no matter the neighborhood, to keep our communities connected.

So next time you hear the mail truck roll up, double-check that your dog is safe and secure. It’s a small act that can make a huge difference.

After all, no one should have to worry about being bitten just for bringing us the mail.
